Coach passenger’s lost £70k found at airport

A 81-year-old man who reported losing a holdall stuffed full with £70,000 in foreign currency on a Heathrow to Hampshire National Express coach service is due to be reunited with his cash after it was found at the airport.

The elderly gentleman believed he’d lost the money at some point during the coach trip after leaving the bag containing the cash in the luggage compartment of the bus. However after the loss was reported to police, they checked the CCTV images taken from when the man boarded the coach and found that the black holdall was never placed on the vehicle.

With this evidence, the police were able to isolate the search to Heathrow Airport where the passengers had landed on a flight from Thailand on the day of the incident. The gentleman had brought the money, in Thai baht and Australian Dollar currency, to the UK with a view to purchasing a property here.

The police issued a warning to all shop keepers and banks between Heathrow and Hampshire to be wary of anyone looking to exchange or pay for goods with large amounts of foreign currency after there were initial suspicions that the money had been stolen from the coach service.

The black holdall was later tracked down by police at the airport, and they have confirmed it matches the description of the one reported missing on the National Express service. The authorities say they are making plans to reunite the 81-year-old with his lost cash.

Green hybrid buses due to be launched in Reading next week

A brand new fleet of hybrid buses are due to be released in Reading next week.

A total of six green buses which are fitted with dual electric and diesel engines are expected to be introduced to Reading’s bus network from Monday.

By April 2012, Reading will have 30 of these new hybrid buses in operation on the town’s routes. Next week will see the first batch of the green buses being delivered to Reading’s bus transport head quarters.

Each bus costs £300,000 with a third of the cost of each vehicle being covered by a Government grant from the Green Bus Fund. The contribution from the Government covers the cost of converting the bus into a hybrid vehicle.

As well as reducing the town’s CO2 emissions with the use of the dual electric and diesel powered engine, the new buses also offer a much smoother ride which will provide regular passengers with a more enjoyable bus travel experience. Plus the electric engines could save the bus company up to 25% a year off fuel costs.

Last year one of the Hybrid buses was dispatched to Reading for a trial run along one of the town’s most popular routes. The reaction to the new green bus was very encouraging, with many passengers commenting on the smoothness of the ride.

The 6 new hybrid buses will be officially unveiled on Monday morning in Reading with a number of invited guests being amongst the lucky few to board the buses on their first journeys in Reading.

Coach firms boycott Derby’s new bus terminal

Derby's new bus station criticised for its bad design

Several coach firms are boycotting Derby’s new multi-million pound bus station on the grounds that the terminal has been badly designed and forces passengers to walk a long way with luggage.

In total 5 different coach hire companies have turned their back on the brand new facility, instead favouring to use a bus stop a few yards up the road.

This rejection of the new bus station spells bad news for the local council who are missing out on thousands of pounds worth of revenue from the departure fees which the coach companies would have had to pay to use the Morledge Terminal.

One of the bosses from the coach company Laver Holidays, says his firm stopped using the terminal almost “immediately” as he explained that the station “failed to meet our needs.” With many of their passengers being elderly, they felt they were unable to offer a door-to-door service through the Morledge Terminal as the passengers are required to walk a fair distance between catching the coach and being dropped off at the taxi rank.

Currently three commercial coach operators are using the Morledge Terminal. The owner of Hawkes Holidays, whose firm uses the terminal, said he thought the station is in a great position as it is very central and because the terminal is completely covered, there is no problem for passengers catching coaches in the rain.

However the coach operator did concede that the distance between the taxi rank and the coach departure area is great. Mr Hawkes suggested a route around the back of the terminal be utilised to allow taxis to drop off passengers closer to the coach bays.

Plymouth’s cat commuter killed by car whilst waiting for the bus

Casper the cat commuter, shown here with one of the First bus drivers, has died

Casper the commuter cat has become a local legend in his hometown of Plymouth after hitting the headlines for his penchant for bus travel. However the sad news was announced last week by Casper’s owner, who put a notice up at his bus stop to inform his fellow commuters that he had sadly been the victim of a hit and run incident, whilst on his way to catch the bus.

The fluffy black and white cat had made a number of friends during his travelling days. The 12-year-old cat would queue up at the bus stop everyday with his fellow passengers to board the number 3 First Devon and Cornwall bus service. However his owner hadn’t realised where her cat kept disappearing every day, until she read about it in her local paper.

Once safely onboard, the moggie would often find himself a comfy seat and curl up for a quick cat-nap. Casper, who was named after the cartoon character Casper the friendly ghost who had a habit of wandering off, was a favourite with all the bus drivers. They would look out for their feline passenger whenever he hopped onboard and would always make sure he got off at his stop once he’d completed his circuit of the town; and they never minded that he didn’t pay.

A representative from First Devon and Cornwall said the company was “devastated” to hear about Casper’s death. The bus company have vowed to pay tribute to their only cat commuter by displaying a picture of him on one of their vehicles.

Irish Coach Firm fed up with the snow and ice decide to grit the roads themselves

Coach Company in Ireland attempt to clear the icy roads by hiring their own gritter

Coach Company in Ireland attempt to clear the icy roads by hiring their own gritter

A coach firm from County Louth in Ireland took matters into their own hands after the icy road conditions forced them to cancel a number of their services. Matthews Coaches put their hands in their pockets and paid to hire a gritter themselves in order to spread salt on the affected roads and get their routes up and running again.

After the severe weather struck the county, Matthews Coaches had no choice but to suspend its services on a number of routes leaving 10 of its drivers with no work, and many of its regular passengers unable to travel. The company is responsible for transporting some 1,500 passengers everyday.

Despite the company’s good intentions, everything didn’t go according to plan as they were confronted with the same problem as faced by the rest of the Ireland and the UK; they ran out of grit.

Paddy Matthews, of Matthews Coaches, said they even tried to come up with some alternative solutions such as using sand from the beach to grit the road, but this failed too as the sand was too wet to go through the gritting machine.

Mr Matthews said he believed the Government should have done more to ensure the roads were passable.

The coach hire boss described the current situation as being “the worst conditions that I have ever seen in all my life” but vowed to “keep plugging away” despite the set-back.

Strawberry Bus Company offers free travel to redheads

Strawberry buses will allow redheads to ride for free as part of a special promotion

Strawberry buses will allow redheads to ride for free as part of a special promotion

St Helens based Bus Company, Strawberry, embraces all things red, and is therefore offering a special promotion until next week whereby all red-heads get to ride the bus for free. All natural gingers will have their bus fares waived when travelling on the service between Skelmersdale, St Helens, and Warrington.

The husband and wife team behind the Strawberry bus company which runs hourly services, said they hoped the promotion would bring a sense of fun to bus travel. The special offer will also go a long way to raising the profile of this newly formed company too.

The drive to celebrate all ginger haired individuals comes after recent research suggested red hair could die out within the next 100 years. The Managing Director of Strawberry, Oliver Howarth said: “At Strawberry we love everything red so when we heard about the decline of red-haired people we wanted to mark the news with our own tribute to redheads.”

A word of warning to anyone who is considering posing as a ginger to get free travel: All Strawberry bus drivers have been issued with a colour chart from which they will be able to determine if a passenger is ginger enough to be eligible for the special offer, and dyed red hair does not count. However all genuine gingers need to get in fast as the promotion ends on December 15th.

Scottish bus driver sports Santa costume in the run up to Christmas

Father Christmas moonlights as bus driver in Scotland

Father Christmas moonlights as bus driver in Scotland

It seems Santa is feeling the pinch from the credit crunch like the rest of us. The man himself can now be found driving a bus in Scotland during the run up to Christmas to make a few extra pounds to keep the reindeers in carrots. Passengers boarding the Number 13 bus between Leith and Blackhall will be greeted by a familiar jolly face the next time they take a trip.

Brendan Davanna is the face behind the bushy beard, and came up with the idea of dressing like Santa to cheer up his passengers on cold winter mornings, and so far, he says it is working a treat.

After getting the thumbs up from the bus company bosses at Edinburgh Coach Line, Mr Davanna started driving his usual route, which coincidentally stops off at Sleigh Drive, wearing the red and white costume.

Passengers young and old have all been excited to meet the new driver, who greets all of them with a Ho ho ho, as Mr Davanna said: “Adults do a double-take, laugh and take pictures on their mobile phones and children love it too.”

Bus driving Santa says he is happy to take Christmas wish lists from his younger passengers and promises to “make sure the elves at the station offer a reply.”

Although Mr Davanna decided to dress up to spread Christmas cheer, he is taking donations for Radio Forth’s charity appeal, Cash For Kids.

The entrepreneurial Santa hopes to build on the success of this year by roping in a few more Santa drivers next Christmas, plus a few elves.
