Coach crashes in the snow killing one school girl onboard and injuring several others
A 17-year-old school girl has died after the coach she was travelling in crashed through the wall of a bridge, plunging 10ft into the river below during the heavy snow this morning (Wednesday).
Pupils from Lanarkshire Grammar School were travelling to Alton Towers theme park when the accident occurred at approximately 6am this morning in South Lanarkshire.
Four other pupils were reported to have been seriously injured, two of which were airlifted to hospital, while a further 8 passengers were said to have sustained minor injury.
The emergency services were forced to evacuate the passengers from the overturned coach via the sunroof. The coach driver was said to have been trapped inside. Some victims were treated at the scene of the crash by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue.
The heavy snow and high winds that hit much of Scotland overnight were said to have played a major role in the accident, although the official cause of he crash is not yet know and investigations are ongoing.
Due to the appalling weather conditions, many parents are asking why the coach trip was allowed to go ahead.
The Prime Minister Gordon Brown referred to the tragic crash this morning during a speech in London saying his thoughts were with the families of those involved.
