School girl dies in snowstorm coach crash

Coach crashes in the snow killing one school girl onboard and injuring several others

A 17-year-old school girl has died after the coach she was travelling in crashed through the wall of a bridge, plunging 10ft into the river below during the heavy snow this morning (Wednesday).

Pupils from Lanarkshire Grammar School were travelling to Alton Towers theme park when the accident occurred at approximately 6am this morning in South Lanarkshire.

Four other pupils were reported to have been seriously injured, two of which were airlifted to hospital, while a further 8 passengers were said to have sustained minor injury.

The emergency services were forced to evacuate the passengers from the overturned coach via the sunroof. The coach driver was said to have been trapped inside. Some victims were treated at the scene of the crash by Strathclyde Fire and Rescue.

The heavy snow and high winds that hit much of Scotland overnight were said to have played a major role in the accident, although the official cause of he crash is not yet know and investigations are ongoing.

Due to the appalling weather conditions, many parents are asking why the coach trip was allowed to go ahead.

The Prime Minister Gordon Brown referred to the tragic crash this morning during a speech in London saying his thoughts were with the families of those involved.

Basingstoke bus route scrapped after poor passenger numbers

Bus route between Basingstoke and Deane will be terminated next month

A bus service which provided a transport link between Basingstoke and Deane has been scrapped after it failed to attract enough passengers.

Despite only having been launched in January, the number 56 bus service is to be axed just months later. The route offered a public transport link for those living on the outskirts of town, however many OAPs using travel tokens have been making use of the service, and these concessionary fares do not generate enough revenue to keep the route up and running.

Steventon Transport Service who operate the route say the service is not a viable business option as it simply doesn’t generate enough money to cover its costs. The previous route had been subsidised by the council, and after they withdrew their investment, STS decided to keep the service going. However after the lack of passenger numbers, the company have now decided to terminate the route on April 17th.

Local councillors had spoken out to encourage more people to make use of the bus service in order to ensure its survival. Although 700 passengers used the service during February, unfortunately it was too little too late, the service will be discontinued.

The authorities will be setting up an alternative community bus to offer a transport link to those who relied on the route. Locals have to call up to book a ride on the bus. The service will be subsidised by the council but it will cost more than a bus fare.

London’s new green buses to be shipped thousands of miles for engine installation

Transport For London have come under fire this week after it was revealed that the much celebrated hydrogen-powered buses will be shipped three-quarters of the way around the world to have their engines fitted.

The environmentally friendly fleet of London buses, which are part of a £15 million scheme, are being made in Northern Ireland. However they will then be shipped to California where they will have their specialist engines installed.

The 5 buses will be ready to join London’s bus network by November this year after their trip back from the States.

There has been much hype about the hydrogen buses as they don’t produce any pollution or carbon dioxide.

Despite their green credentials, many have questioned whether the long trip to California and back, and the massive carbon footprint this will incur, is worth it. It’s been specified that a single container ship emits more pollution than 2,000 diesel trucks, however shipping the buses is more environmentally friendly when compared to flying.

TFL have defended their decision to ship the hydrogen-powered buses saying that in the long term they will reduce their carbon footprint considerably. They say it is necessary to transport the new buses so far as they are high tech vehicles and only a handful of places in the world have the expertise to work on these buses.

Anonymous donor helps Henley school fund new minibus

Brand new minibus for school in Oxfordshire after a generous donation from a mystery villager

Stoke Row Primary School in Henley-on-Thames were the lucky recipients of an anonymous £10,000 donation which helped pay for a brand new minibus for the school.

The primary school’s old minibus was in a bad state of disrepair and had been in use at the school for the past 13 years.

The school rely on their minibus transport to take the children on extracurricular activities, sporting events, and educational trips and is a much valued asset. Given the deteriorating condition of the school’s current bus, plus the spiralling running costs to keep the old minibus on the road, the parent teacher association (friends) decided to launch a fund raising campaign to buy a new bus.

The fund raising scheme got off to a great start and the association managed to raise £13,000 in just 16 months. With the money raised the group started to look into buying a second hand minibus. However a mystery donation changed their fortunes after the fund was presented with an extra £10,000.

With the new cash injection from the mystery person, who is said to live in the village, the school were able to splash out and buy a brand new 17-seater minibus which is said to be much safer, quieter, and more economical than the old one.

Coach Hire Company pays out to female driver for sexual harassment claim

Coach firm pay out £22,500 in damages to former employee

A female coach driver from Northern Ireland has successfully sued her former employer for £22,500 after launching a sexual harassment case against them.

The claim was made against Chambers Coach Hire by Julie Rutherford who used to work for the firm as a coach driver.

The Equality Commission released details of the settlement earlier this month.

Ms Rutherford from Magerafelt, County Londonderry, alleged that the coach hire company had failed in their duty to protect her from unwanted sexual comments and inappropriate physical contact. Ms Rutherford added that the management at Chamber Coach Hire did not handle her complaint correctly when she approached them with her grievance.

The court ruled in favour of Ms Rutherford and she was awarded £22,500 in damages. Ms Rutherford has since found alternative employment with another company driving both coaches and lorries and says she is enjoying her new position, and is happy working alongside her new male colleagues.

Speaking after the ruling Ms Rutherford said she hoped her decision to take legal action would set an example to other companies that sexual harassment in the workplace will not be tolerated. She added, “no one should have to put up with treatment like this.”

Scottish government urged to introduce bus scrappage scheme

Calls for hybrid bus fund to be set up in Scotland

There were calls this week for the Scottish government to introduce a bus scrappage scheme in order to prevent job losses at some of the country’s biggest coach builder companies.

The launch of such a scheme, it was argued, would also have a positive effect on the environment and help Scotland reduce its carbon emissions.

Transport spokesman, Charlie Gordon, is calling for the Government to set up a fund of £3 million to provide financial help to those bus companies who wish to invest in a fleet of greener, hybrid buses. These vehicles have both a standard fuel powered engine, and an electrical motor.

Mr Gordon added that the introduction of such a scheme would help the environment as there would be a decrease in the number of old and highly polluting buses on the roads, plus it would help safeguard jobs within the coach building industry, and it will result in an improved public transport system for passengers in Scotland.

The call for the bus scrappage scheme comes after the UK government announced that they had put aside a fund of £30 million for the provision of hybrid buses and now Scotland hopes to follow suit.

Edinburgh launch new luxury Airlink buses

Lothian buses launch a new fleet of luxury vehicles

After investing £3million in new vehicles, Lothian buses revealed this week the latest fleet of high spec buses are due to hit the road as part of the Airlink service at the end of the month.

The new fleet of top of the range buses offer a whole host great features including free Wi-Fi, mood enhancing LED lighting, electric power points for passengers to plug in lap tops of phones, CCTV cameras, plus the upholstery is made from a recycled leather by-product called E-Leather which feels just like the real thing.

Lothian Buses say the introduction of the new £200,000 double-decker buses will make their fleet the best in Scotland. The company is also planning to add screens at bus stops displaying bus timetables and also tourist information such as a list of hotels and attractions in the area.

The bus firm decided to push ahead with the hefty investment in new vehicles back in 2008 when it put an order in to coach builder, Wrightbus, for 75 vehicles. The 14 Airlink buses which are due to come into operation in the coming weeks are the most luxurious vehicles from that order.

The introduction of the new fleet comes just after the new was released by Edinburgh airport that they have beaten their target of getting 26% of its passengers to use public transport. Figures revealed recently showed that in fact, 28.7% of its passengers had travelled to the airport by public transport.
