Northumberland minibus service for the elderly and disabled given a lifeline

Vital minibus service for elderly and disabled in Blyth is safe for 6 months

A Northumberland minibus service which provides transport for elderly and disabled people living in the Blyth area has been given a lifeline after it came under threat from council spending cuts.

11 different organisations make use of the vital service every week. The 16-seater minibus allows the most vulnerable people living in the Blyth community to get out and about whether it is to group meetings, church, appointments, or activities.

Up until now the council had funded the scheme putting aside £50,000 a year to keep the minibus service up and running. However after it was announced earlier this year that the funding would be lost due to major cut backs at the council, many group organisers and local councillors came together to see if they could come up with a plan to save the scheme.

Blyth Valley Disabled Forum who runs the service started discussions with the council and as a result, an additional £25,000 has been found to enable the service to keep running for another 6 months. However talks are ongoing in order to uncover a long-term solution for the minibus scheme’s funding issues.

The council says it is looking into ways of integrating the minibus scheme with other community services and will endeavour to uncover other sources of funding.

Book-reading bus driver sacked

Last week we reported on the story of a bus driver in Birmingham who was filmed reading while behind the wheel.

Bosses at National Express West Midlands have confirmed this week that following a disciplinary hearing, the driver of the bus has been dismissed from his duties.

A passenger travelling on the number 61 bus service recorded the footage of the driver openly reading a book while steering the bus with his elbows. The video, which was recorded on the passenger’s mobile phone, was posted on the internet site YouTube where it has received 104,000 views to date.

After the footage came to light the driver was immediately suspended from his duties. Following this week’s disciplinary hearing where the bosses described the driver’s behaviour as “completely unacceptable” the driver has lost his job because of his actions.

The bus had been travelling from Birmingham city centre en route to Selly Oak when the footage was filmed. The passenger who recorded the footage described seeing the driver failing to indicate into a bus stop as he was too engrossed in his book. At one point the bus was travelling along a busy dual carriageway with the driver steering with his elbows as he continued to read his book.

The police are also reviewing the evidence to determine whether or not the driver should face charges for dangerous driving.

Cobham Bus Museum’s Spring Meeting is a big success

A great assortment of vintage buses were on display at the show

A record number of visitors poured through the gates at Cobham Bus Museum 37th Show which took place earlier this month. Over 300 buses and coaches were on display including a horse-bus dating back to the 1890’s.

Organisers said the good weather also contributed to the large number of visitors who attended the open-air show over the weekend. A mixture of motor enthusiasts and the general public came along to see the massive array of vehicles on display.

As well as the vast assortment of classic coaches and buses on display, a number of vintage cars were also on show for the hoards of show visitors to marvel at.

One of the biggest attractions was the historic horse drawn bus. The vehicle was also used to give rides so visitors could have a taste of what it must have been like to ride the bus over a hundred years ago.  Rides were also offered on the vintage buses which ran shuttle runs back and forth between the showground and Cobham Bus Museum.

The Transport Commissioner for London Peter Hardy, was one of the special guests who attended the show. Other visitors who turned out praised the show saying they were very impressed by the event itself, adding that the whole occasion was very well organised.

Coach fall death “accidental” says coroner

Football fan fell to his death after kicking open the emergency exit on a moving coach

The death of a Manchester United football fan who was killed as a result of falling from a moving coach has been recorded as “accidental” following a coroner’s inquest.

22-year-old man from Newport, South Wales, was travelling back from watching Manchester United beat Everton at home at the beginning of the year when the accident occurred.

Daniel McFarlane, a carpenter, had been warned by the coach party organiser that he would have to leave the vehicle if his bad behaviour continued. The football fan had got into an argument with another passenger and had smashed a glass, which he refused to clear up.

In his temper, McFarlane then kicked the emergency exit of the coach open saying, “If you want me off the bus I’ll get off” before plummeting to his death. The coach was travelling along the M5 near West Bromwich. McFarlane sustained multiple injuries as a result of the fall and died instantly.

The coroner’s court heard that the victim had been drinking and traces of cocaine had been found in his system.

The West Midland’s coroner recorded a verdict of “accidental death” adding that he didn’t think the accident would have occurred had McFarlane had been “thinking rationally.”

Passenger films bus driver reading at the wheel

A bus passenger travelling on a National Express West Midlands service filmed the driver openly reading a book while driving.

The bus company launched an investigation after the footage, which had been filmed on the passenger’s mobile phone, came to light after it was posted on internet video site YouTube. The footage shows the driver was completely oblivious to the fact he was being filmed.

The video was filmed on Monday night onboard the number 61 bus which was travelling out of Birmingham city centre through Selly Oak. At one point the bus travelled along a busy dual carriageway with the driver of the vehicle, using his elbows to steer the bus as he held the book in his hands and continued to read.

The anonymous passenger described how the driver didn’t even try and conceal his book when he pulled in at bus stops to collect passengers. At one point, the driver didn’t even indicate into a bus stop as he was too engrossed in his read.

The driver, who has since been suspended, has not been named. However the bus firm are taking disciplinary action and the driver could potentially be fired for endangering the safety of those onboard the bus.

Bus and rail operator Arriva agrees to £1.58 billion takeover bid

Arriva taken over by Deutshe Bahn in £1.58 billion deal

The UK’s third biggest transport provider, Arriva, has agreed to a takeover bid estimated to be worth £1.58 billion from Germany’s Deutsche Bahn.

Sunderland based Arriva currently operates a number of bus services in major cities in the UK and is responsible for a fifth of buses in London. Arriva also runs buses and trains in Wales, plus bus services in the South East and Midlands. Earlier this year however, they announced that their Cross Country train network was losing money.

Arriva is also the only British transport company to have moved into Europe taking advantage of the increasing liberalisation of the transport system in Europe.

Deutsche Bahn is also a big player in the world of transport operating all of Germany’s national rail services, and also Chiltern Railways and freight railways in the UK.

The new deal between the two transport giants will create one of the biggest transport conglomerates in the whole of Europe.

Deutsche Bahn’s chief executive outlined his ambitions for the new deal saying: “Arriva will give Deutsche Bahn the platform to expand in Europe and enhance its position as one of Europe’s leading passenger transport groups.”

Electric minibus in the pipeline

After the success of their electric transit van, Smith Edison are now creating an electric minibus

The makers of the award-winning Smith Edison electric van have now turned their attention to creating an electric powered minibus, the prototype of which was premiered at the CV Operator Show 2010.

The green vehicle will be the first 17-seater electric minibus in the UK. The model is currently in production and is based on the Ford transit chassis. Once complete the manufacturers say the electric minibus will be able to reach top speeds of 50mph, will boast an 80 mile battery range, plus it will take 8 hours to completely recharge the battery.

A battery, which is installed underneath the minibus so as not to take away from the passenger space, is at the centre of the technology which will run the vehicle.

Once the minibus is up and running the manufacturers expect the vehicles will be popular for use as airport shuttles, to transport tourists to attractions, and for city trips. Interest in the 17-setaer electric minibus is expected to be huge due to its seriously green credentials and its ability to dramatically reduce carbon emissions.

Smith Edison also has 12-seater and 15-seater electric minibuses available. The vehicles have very low running costs when compared with petrol fuelled minibuses, they emit zero emissions, and can be charged fully overnight.

Stowaway clings to bottom of school coach

School exchange trip to France returns with an extra passenger

An asylum seeker went to great lengths to gain entry to the UK earlier this month. The Sudanese man was discovered clinging to the underneath of a school coach as it returned from a trip to France.

Border officials told how the man was found at the Dartford river crossing as the school bus made its way back to Manchester with a group of 30 school children and 6 teachers onboard.

The coach driver was alerted to the Sudanese man’s presence after hearing shouts of “help” and loud banging coming from underneath the vehicle. After the coach came to a halt at the toll booths at the M25 Dartford crossing, the man rolled out from under the coach.

The man, who is described as being in his late teens, gave the youngsters onboard the coach the “thumbs up” before being taken away by police.

It appears that the asylum seeker had concealed himself under the coach, sitting on the gearbox, while the coach was parked at a shopping centre in Calais.

The coach travelled for 50 miles, reaching speeds of up to 70mph, as the man clung onto the underneath of the coach. The stowaway even managed to evade himself from port officials who searched the coach before it boarded the ferry.

A UK Boarders Agency Spokeswoman confirmed that the Sudanese man was taken into police custody and that he has put forward an application for asylum in the UK.

Bendy bus trial in Leicestershire

Bendy bus to be tested on busy Leicestershire route

The bendy bus is set to be trialled on a popular route in Leicestershire after the local council announced that the busy service needs extra capacity to cope with the large numbers of passengers.

Bus operator Arriva will test the 18m (60ft) bendy bus on the number 80 service from Oadby to St Margaret’s bus station in Leicester.

The bendy buses were first introduced on mass to the city of London. However the high capacity vehicles are now being removed from the city’s transport network following an announcement by the mayor, Boris Johnson.

Since their launch in London, there have been a number of safety concerns over the use of bendy buses on London roads.

Many cyclists have complained about the bendy buses saying the vehicles are unpredictable due to the elongated length as it makes it difficult to judge which way they will move while in transit. There have also been a small number of incidents where passengers have been injured on bendy buses.

Several other cities in the UK have launched bendy buses on their roads including Leeds and Nottingham.

Transport bosses in Leicestershire have welcomed the trial saying they are in great need of higher capacity buses on the busy route and the bendy buses offer a viable solution to this issue.
