Woman refused bus job on the grounds of race

Community transport company apologises to woman who was wrongly discouraged from applying for a job because of her race

A white woman was turned away from applying for a job with a London transport company because she isn’t black, a British newspaper has reported this week.

Marion Ryan, a 40-year-old mother from Clapton in East London, is looking to return to work after taking 18 years out to raise her four children, and so approached Hackney Community Transport (HCT) after seeing an advert for a training position as a bus passenger assistant.

However, upon enquiring into the vacancy at the firm’s head quarters, the Londoner was told by a member of staff at the company that she wasn’t eligible for the post as they were looking to fill the vacancy with an individual from a mixed race, Afro-Caribbean, or Asian background.

The mother-of-four spoke of her anger at being turned away on the basis of her ethnicity saying her first thoughts were that she was being unfairly discriminated against.

The Hackney based Transport Company, which aims to provide affordable transport for community causes such as charities and organisations, say Mrs Ryan was given incorrect information, although they do not deny the incident took place. Furthermore, say they have been trying to contact Mrs Ryan to tell her that she is eligible for the post and to apologise for the false information she was given.

The firm has extended its sincerest apologies to Mrs Ryan, although she says it’s too little too late.

Disagreement over coach fare upsets India’s shotgun championship team

A dispute over coach travel threatened to overshadow the Shotgun World Championships this week

A dispute over payment for a coach trip boiled over with the Indian team members this week who were competing in the shotgun world cup which was held in Dorchester.

A row allegedly broke out between the coach driver and several competitors from the Indian team who were attempting to catch a ride back to their hotel after competing at the Southern Counties Shooting Ground near Evershot.

While the bill for the transport was being settled by the Indian team organisers, some of the competitors attempted to board the coach. Upon boarding the vehicle they were allegedly told to leave.

The story was leaked to the Indian media and the incident hit the headlines in several major newspapers and news channels in the country.

The Indian team said they had been “yelled and screamed” at to get off the coach, however event organisers say they received a complaint from one of the coach drivers who says she had been subject to verbal abuse from several of the competitors.

The matter has since been resolved and put down to a misunderstanding by one of the directors of the event. After the incident was put to bed, the whole team enjoyed a final dinner with the event organisers and it has been reported that there are bad feelings.

Arriva unveil ice sculpture to celebrate their frozen bus fares

No increase in bus fares for the next 12 months says Arriva

Bus company, Arriva Yorkshire, recently announced plans to continue to hold off any fares increase, meaning that prices have now remained frozen for over one year.

With the last fare increase taking place at the beginning of February 2009, Arriva Yorkshire believes its decision to freeze fares will provide the perfect incentive for people to leave their car at home and switch to bus travel.

Nigel Featham, managing director for Arriva Yorkshire, said: “We wanted to mark the ongoing freeze with something quite special and we thought the ice sculpture was perfect! I even had a go myself!”

We hope that this continued freeze on our fares will reflect our loyalty to our customers and hopefully it will, along with the huge investment we have made in our fleet, attract new passengers onboard. With prices at the pumps on the rise again it’s great news that we can continue to offer our passengers good value for money.”

Arriva Yorkshire has invested £17 million in modern and environmentally friendly new buses and passengers are noticing the difference, with the latest customer survey showing 9 out of 10 passengers are satisfied with the service they provide.

Arriva Yorkshire operates local bus services in West and North Yorkshire, including Leeds, York, Selby, Wakefield, Castleford, Dewsbury, Heckmondwike, Huddersfield and Halifax.

London mayor announces the return of the Routemaster bus

London’s mayor Boris Johnson has announced the return of the iconic routemaster complete with open platform and green credentials.

However the new routemaster bus will be an altered version of the bus of old which was part of the fixtures and fittings of London’s transport system. A digital image of the new bus was unveiled by the mayor during a press call at a Battersea bus depot. The brand new version of the iconic vehicle will have two sets of stairs, plus an open platform at the rear of the bus which will allow passengers to hop on and off as they please.

An extra member of staff will travel onboard the routemasters when the open platform is in use to ensure the safety of passengers. The feature will be closed during quiet periods, and on night bus services.

The vehicles will also feature green technology which will mean a reduction in emissions and also noise as the buses are much quieter to run, plus running costs will be reduced as the new routemasters have improved fuel consumption.

However all of this comes at a price. The first 5 buses will cost a total of £7.8 million although this covers the cost of the design, development, and the building of the state of the art buses. The vehicles which follow the first batch are expected to cost £300,000 each.

Mayor Boris Johnson believes the buses will become a “red emblem of 21st century London” and will be vehicles which “Londoners can be proud of.”

Tour bus luxuries for singer Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift's tour bus has a fireplace and a treadmill onboard

Country singer Taylor Swift has revealed that she’s kitted her tour bus out with a few unusual luxuries to ensure she feels at home while on tour.

The award-winning artist, who’s been touring the US and Australia since the beginning of the year, has had a fireplace and a treadmill installed on her tour bus so she can keep fit, and put her feet up in front of the fire while on the road.

The 20-year-old singer says that she “feels at home” whenever she’s travelling on her tour bus which is exactly the effect she was hoping to create. An extra comfy bed has also been added to the bus at the request of Ms Swift to ensure she can catch a cat-nap here and there during her gruelling tour schedule.

The tour bus is a home from home for the young star while she spends time away from Tennessee where she is based when she isn’t touring. Taylor still has a handful of dates left before her Fearless 210 tour comes to an end at the beginning of July.

For a girl with strict demands on what should be onboard her tour bus, the singer revealed she’s very low maintenance when it comes to the car she drives. Taylor has chosen to keep her millions in the bank instead of splashing out a set of flash wheels as she still drives the same beaten-up banger she had at 16.

Cardiff’s free “b” bus to be axed

Amid mounting pressure from local people, Cardiff Council has announced this week that the controversial free “b” bus service which operates in the city centre will be axed.

We reported last week how a group of young people from the city were planning a demonstration to protest against the service which they say is a drain on public expenses. The decision was made to stage a protest after it emerged that the cost to transport each passenger on the free “b” bus stood at £9, which many argued was a waste of taxpayers’ money.

An alternative means of transport is being lined up. The council is looking to introduce an electric powered 7-seater people carrier to take-over from the two single-decker buses which were used to run continuous circuits around the city. The main issue with the buses was that the service wasn’t taken up by many passengers, which resulted in the bus often travelling around the city half empty.

The new people carrier will have full wheelchair access, and will experiment with a range of new routes around the city centre, including possibly, some pedestrianised streets.

Cardiff Council is also considering running trials on a dial-a-ride minibus service for people with mobility issues to allow them to have access to shops in Cardiff’s city centre.

Disaster averted by coach passenger after driver collapses

A quick-thinking passenger steered the coach to safety after the driver passed out

A potentially dangerous situation was averted by the quick actions of a coach passenger after the driver of the vehicle collapsed behind the wheel.

20 passengers were reported to have been travelling onboard the Megabus coach service between South Wales and Birmingham when the incident took place. As luck would have it, one of those passengers happened to be an off-duty coach driver.

The driver of the Megabus coach suddenly passed out while driving along a dual carriageway on the A40 in Monmouth. Luckily the passenger, who also works as a coach driver, noticed that the driver had collapsed and leaped into action, steering the vehicle off the busy road, and bringing the coach to a halt before turning on the hazard lights to warn other motorists.

One of the passengers travelling on the coach described how events unfolded quickly saying, “One minute we were cruising along quite happily, the next the driver had keeled over the wheel.”

Emergency services were called to the scene and the driver was admitted to hospital for tests, he was later discharged. The coach company say a full investigation is underway to determine what went wrong.

The unnamed passenger who saved the day has been praised by the coach company with a spokesperson from Megabus saying, “he averted what could have been a serious incident.”
