Stagecoach to invest £60 million in greener buses and coaches

National transport operators, the Stagecoach Group, are set to invest £60 million on updating their fleet with greener and environmentally friendly buses and coaches. The first of the eco-friendly coaches are expected to be up and running as part of the Stagecoach network from as early as May this year.

In total, Stagecoach is planning to buy 390 new vehicles with their £60 million fund with the new coaches and buses being added to the operator’s fleet between 2012 and 2013. There are also suggestions that the transport provider is planning to order more green buses at the end of the year.

The new order of buses and coaches will include the UK’s first 15 metre inter-deck coach which will be used on the operator’s budget long distance transport service, megabus.com. All of the new buses will meet the updated Euro 5 emissions standards so they will help reduce total CO2 emissions across the Stagecoach fleet considerably.

A range of manufacturers are involved in fulfilling the 390 vehicle order including Volvo, Wrightbus, AFL, Van Hool, Scania, Plaxton and Optare who will be supplying Stagecoach with a selection of coaches and minibuses including 11 minibuses, 87 single-decker coaches, 95 double-decker coaches, 19 hybrid vehicles, 37 standard coaches, 11 minibuses and 141 midi-coaches.

The new greener vehicles will be used on regional Stagecoach routes travelling in England, Scotland and Wales, but outside of the capital.

Bus driver jailed for deliberately striking a cyclist

A Bus driver from Bristol hit the headlines this week after he was sentenced to 17 months in jail after a court were shown CCTV footage of the driver mowing down a cyclist in what was branded an “assault” rather than an accident.

29-year-old bus driver Gavin Hill was seen on camera having a verbal exchange with Phillip Mead on his bicycle, it’s understood the pair argued after travelling over a roundabout, with the cyclist being seen to pull at the windscreen wipers of the bus before it drove off.

Moments later, the bike is seen cycling ahead of the bus, when the driver of the vehicle speeds up behind the bicycle, ramming into the cyclist and causing the bike to somersault into the side of the road. The 43-year-old cyclist suffered multiple fractures, breaking his leg and wrist as a result of the collision and was forced to spend two weeks in hospital.

In court this week, bus driver Mr Hill pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and causing grievous bodily harm. The judge sentenced Hill, who had been employed as a bus driver for 10 years, to 17 months in prison and disqualified him from driving for two and a half years. Hill described the incident as a “moment of madness.”

Cyclist Mr Mead spent 6 weeks in plaster following the incident in April of last year, but is now fully recovered and back commuting to work by bike.

London bus robberies on the rise according to Labour group

According to figures collated by Labour, robberies on London buses have increased in seven months of 2011, compared to the same period in 2010. Labour used figures from Transport for London to generate their recent statistics.

The Labour group looked at a snapshot of data from TFL figures relating to the seven months between April to December 2009-10 and the same period 2010-11 and found that robberies on London buses went up from 1,753 incidents to 2,000 in the latter seven months.

While this statistics may have signalled alarm bells, the picture wasn’t all doom and gloom for public transport users in London as overall, the study found that crime on buses actually fell by 33% over the course of the last four years. Violent crime on buses has been reduced by 13% and also criminal damage fell by the same amount, while drug related offences also dipped by 14%.

Labour are using the recent figures of an increase in London bus robberies to argue that police officer numbers should not be cut in the capital to ensure the safety of those travelling on the capital’s transport network.

London mayor Boris Johnson promised last summer that 414 would be put in place by the end of March to ensure the safety and welfare of passengers on the London transport system so there is a commitment being made to make London transport as safe as possible and clamp down on criminal behaviour.

Mini London bus created out of a lawn mower

A mini red London bus has been created by a pensioner from Norfolk out of a ride-on lawn mower. The project has taken four years to complete, with 77-year-old Derek Jakeway undertaking all of the work to transform the lawn mower into life-like mini bus by himself.

Despite being a miniature bus, the novelty vehicle has no more room onboard than a small car with the capacity to carry just four children or two adults and the one driver so it won’t be undertaking any public services any time soon.

The former RAF serviceman admitted he’d spent several thousand pounds and four years of his life creating the one-of-a-kind lawn mower come London bus. The attention to detail in the final red bus design is impressive as the vehicle features working headlights and interior lights, as well as a mechanism designed by the grandfather which allows the driver to open the rear door for his or her passengers while sitting in the driving seat, and also a working roller sign so the bus can display which route its travelling.

However despite the hard work that Mr Jakeway put into creating the mini bus and the fondness he has for the vehicle, he is reluctantly looking for a new owner for the novelty ride as he and his wife are moving home and will no longer have room for the creation. The bus enthusiast say they new owner would ideally have a large garden to accommodate the unusual vehicle.

Dalmatian found on London bus gets a new home

A street-wise canine who hopped on the top deck of a London bus after getting lost in the city has been re-homed.

The Dalmatian became separated from its owner and decided to seek shelter on a London bus before being rescued by a passenger who took the lost canine to the nearby Battersea Dog and Cats Home. Unfortunately the Dalmatian wasn’t wearing any kind of tag to identify her and neither was she micro-chipped, so reuniting the dog with her owner proved impossible.

The story of the bus riding Dalmatian was featured in a number of local newspapers and luckily for dog, which was renamed Anabelle by her rescuer, the story was picked up by a couple from Bedfordshire who already had two Dalmatian and were considering getting a third to join the family. After reading the story of Anabelle’s bus ride to Battersea Dog’s Home, the couple jumped at the chance to re-home bus riding Dalmatian.

It’s thought the dog managed to board the number 63 double-decker London bus without the driver even noticing, before making herself comfortable on the top deck of the bus. A fellow passenger noticed the dog seemed to be travelling alone and alerted the driver who stopped the bus and refused to continue until the Dalmatian was removed. Luckily one of the passengers took pity on the pooch and agreed to take her to the nearby dog’s rescue home.

Sixth form school girl passes her bus driving test

A sixth form school girl will now be able to drive her fellow pupils to school after passing her PCV (Passenger Carrying Vehicle) licence last Friday. Jodie Wood from Cumbria is now a fully fledged bus driver at just 18 years of age, however the school girl may have had a distinct advantage as driving is in her blood being the third generation of her family to become a qualified bus driver.

18-year-old Jodie is now qualified to drive a vehicle up to 12 ton in weight and with a maximum number of 70 seats, so perfect if she’s planning a day out with all her friends!

The teenager has been working to pass all stages of the bus driving test, including the Driver Certificate Professional Competence and the PCV since turning 18 last year. Jodie was encouraged to try for her bus licence after passing her standard car driving test with an almost perfect score, only clocking up one minor in her whole test.

The youngster from Cumbria’s mother, Tracy Swain, still works as a bus driver while her grandfather, Robin Walton, is a retired bus driver so a career behind the wheel looked likely for the teenager from a young age.

While Jodie has passed her bus driving test, the sixth former is still keeping her options open career-wise. The 18-year-old is studying childcare at school while holding down a part-time job as a barmaid and now since passing her test, she has a second job to fit into her busy schedule as she’s been offered the chance to drive buses for a local company, Metcalfe Coaches.

Go North East bus provider launches bus tickets on your mobile

Go North East bus service provider which operates 660 buses and coaches providing local transport services have introduced as brand new mobile ticketing system which will enable smartphone users to pay for their travel online and display their e-ticket on their phones.

The North East bus and coach transport operator, which transport 72 million passengers every year, has teamed up with the Corethree platform to provide the electronic ticketing facility for bus and coach passengers. The e-tickets will be compatible for use on a wide range of smartphones including iPhone, Blackberry, and Android.

The tickets must be displayed to the driver on the passenger’s phone when boarding each bus or coach service. A number of anti-fraud checks have been put in place to prevent fraudsters taking advantage of the new electronic ticketing service. The multi-layer solution uses colour, words and moving digital water marks to distinguish the genuine e-tickets. A number of elements will also change on the tickets on a daily, hourly or even weekly basis to combat any attempts to replicate the bus fares.

The transport operator already offers a mobile app to allow passengers to access bus and coach timetabling, locate nearest bus stops and live service updates via mobile devices.

The mobile ticketing system is due to come into play on February 8th on Go North East bus and coach services.
