A Polish National was killed as a result of the collision
A London bus driver who fled the country as he was about to stand trial accused of causing death by dangerous driving, has been tracked down an address in France.
The fugitive bus driver is due to be extradited from France to serve a 4-year-jail term which was imposed after he failed to show for his trial.
30-year-old Raouf Mraidi was driving a double-decker bus which smashed into a tram in Croydon, in 2008 after he took the decision to jump a red light. 28-year-old Andrzej Karcz was killed as a result of the collision.
Immediately after the incident, the defendant appeared at the Magistrates Court where he was charged with causing death by dangerous driving. The 30-year-old bus driver was released on conditional bail and forced to relinquish his French passport.
However when the trial date arrived in November 2009, Mraidi failed to show. In his absence the judge handed down a 4-year jail sentence and also a 5-year driving ban.
Following a joint investigation between British and French police, Mraidi was traced to an address in France. The former London bus driver is now in the process of being extradited back to the UK so he can serve his jail sentence.
A police officer from the Road Death Investigation Unit said it was always their priority to bring Mraidi to justice after the needless death of the Polish man, Mr Karcz.
