Go North East bus provider launches bus tickets on your mobile

Go North East bus service provider which operates 660 buses and coaches providing local transport services have introduced as brand new mobile ticketing system which will enable smartphone users to pay for their travel online and display their e-ticket on their phones.

The North East bus and coach transport operator, which transport 72 million passengers every year, has teamed up with the Corethree platform to provide the electronic ticketing facility for bus and coach passengers. The e-tickets will be compatible for use on a wide range of smartphones including iPhone, Blackberry, and Android.

The tickets must be displayed to the driver on the passenger’s phone when boarding each bus or coach service. A number of anti-fraud checks have been put in place to prevent fraudsters taking advantage of the new electronic ticketing service. The multi-layer solution uses colour, words and moving digital water marks to distinguish the genuine e-tickets. A number of elements will also change on the tickets on a daily, hourly or even weekly basis to combat any attempts to replicate the bus fares.

The transport operator already offers a mobile app to allow passengers to access bus and coach timetabling, locate nearest bus stops and live service updates via mobile devices.

The mobile ticketing system is due to come into play on February 8th on Go North East bus and coach services.

London bus stops to get Olympic inspired art

Bus stops in London are getting an art make over ahead of the Olympic Games this summer. As part of a special art commission, selected bus shelters will be decorated with changing displays on the roof, with 30 bus shelters in 20 London boroughs already boasting these innovative displays.

Mark Titchner is the artist behind the latest bus shelter art project in which motivational slogans and phrases are being flashed up on the top of bus stops. Commands including, “If you don’t like your life, you can change it” and “Act or be Acted Upon” are being displayed on the roofs of bus shelters so those travelling on the top deck of London buses can look down and read the phrase.

There are 31 different motivational statements in total which are being changed on a daily basis on the bus shelter displays so commuters will see a different one every day they pass the same stop. The system is controlled by curators via the internet who change the displays at different times of the day and on different routes. The idea is to give passengers a thought to take with them on their journey, the Turner Prize nominated artist revealed.

While a number of professional artists are involved in the creation of the art for the London bus shelters, the public can also get involved via Bus Tops, where the people can submit their ideas and suggestions for use as art displays on the shelters.

The project is part of a wider programme of 12 public art commissions rolled out throughout the rest of England, also Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland.

London double-decker bus ploughs into supermarket entrance

A big red double-decker London bus crashed into the entrance of a busy south west London supermarket yesterday, narrowly avoiding injuring shoppers and those travelling on the service. No injuries were reported, although the Sainsbury’s store in Wandsworth where the accident occurred was usually busy at approximately 11am when the incident occurred.

The road around the Sainsbury’s supermarket was cordoned off as police carried out an investigation of the area. One eyewitness described how the accident occurred, saying that a road sweeper vehicle had been involved in the crash. Witnesses reported seeing passengers travelling on the bus at the time, although everyone escaped the accident without serious injury.

According to the witness, the road sweeper was travelling in one direction, with the bus travelling in the opposite direction, and the crash occurred when the two collided, with the bus driver left with nowhere to go but into the entrance of the Sainsbury’s store.

The number 28 bus was reported to have suffered damage to the front of the vehicle including a smashed windscreen. Debris from the accident was strewn across the area in front of the busy Sainsbury’s store including glass from the windscreen.

Transport for London confirmed that a full investigation into the accident will be carried out to determine the cause of the incident and to ensure nothing of this nature happens again.

Bus driving Santa raises money for charity in Scotland

Until last Christmas, bus driver James Wallace was a regular face on the First bus services in Musselburgh, Scotland, and regularly dressed up as Santa over the festive period, much to the delight of his passengers. However after suffering a health scare, the 44-year-old had to call an end to his driving days.

However he wasn’t about to let this Christmas go by without donning the red and white suit and beard and getting back on the bus to bring some Christmas cheer to passengers, and also raise some money for charity.

This year James has had some help from a fellow Santa and an elf who have also been riding on the number 13 First bus route to help raise fund for the Down’s Syndrome charity, CHAS, as the 44-year-old bus driver’s daughter is affected by the condition as so it is a cause which is very close to his heart.

The Christmas crew alternate between the number 13 service and the Megabus route between Edinburgh and Dundee and Edinburgh and Perth. James has been driving his bus dressed as Santa for four years now, and since making a full recovery from his health scare, he saw no point in not carrying out his annual fundraiser.

The group are hoping to beat last year’s total when they raised £700 for the charity, and with several days still to go until Christmas and £500 already in the pot, the bus driving Santa’s look likely to exceed their target.

Sleeping coach driver woken by school pupil who saves bus ride from disaster

A 17-year-old school pupil saved a recent bus trip from disaster after he woken the driver after he noticed the 65-year-old had fallen asleep while behind the wheel.

The incident occurred in Tacoma, Washington, during a routine school bus trip on which 17-year-old Emmanuel Williams regularly travelled. The pupil said he had noticed the driver was periodically closing and opening his eyes for short spaces of time while driving the school bus full of children, but when the student noticed the bus started to veer across the road, he quickly jumped to his feet and ran to the front of the bus to rouse the driver who had dozed off.

The moment the watchful teen leaps to his feet, grabbing the steering wheel and simultaneously waking the driver from his sleep, was captured on the CCTV camera installed on the bus.

Luckily the driver snapped awake and quickly regained control of the school bus, averting disaster. The bus travel company say they are investigating following the report of the near miss on the school route, however they added that the 65-year-old bus driver in question has an impeccable driving record without a single incident or accident reported in the 8 years he’s been with the company.

The travel firm say the bus driver in questioned has been put on leave while the matter is investigated. The bosses say they are looking into whether the driver’s drowsiness was caused by medication or a health condition.

First of the new London Routemaster buses driven off the production line

The first of the new style London Routemaster buses was driven off the production line today by the man who’s spearheaded their return.

Boris Johnson vowed to scrap the bendy buses and reintroduce a new version of the classic open platform London buses as part of his election pledge during his bid to become mayor of London in 2008, and today he delivered on that promise when he got behind the wheel to drive the first of the vehicles off the production line at the Wrightbus factory in Northern Ireland.

The first batch of finished hybrid Routemasters will be operated by Arriva and introduced to busy central London bus routes from early next year. Their return will signal the first time the Routemasters have been seen on the London transport systems since they were phased out in 2005.

Eight of the new style double-deckers will be launched into the city to begin with, all of which feature three entrances/ exits, and two staircases. However the rear exit of the bus will only be open at peak times as a second member of staff is required to ride on the bus to supervise when the back platform is opened.

The London mayor predicts that the new Routemasters will ensure London is seen as a “world leader” in terms of its public transport system, and is confident the environmentally friendly buses will be well received by the public as the double-decker have been designed with the city and its passengers in mind.

Marathon runner stripped of medal for catching the bus

A 31-year-old marathon runner was stripped of his third place medal this week after he was caught out catching the bus for the last leg of the race near Newcastle.

Rob Sloan was taking part a marathon in the North of England on Sunday but after running 20 miles, decided to bow out of the race, catching a ride on the bus carrying spectators. However as the bus rolled up to the finishing line, Mr Sloan had a change of heart and hopped off the bus, emerging from the woods to sprint across the finish line on foot and win third place.

Race officials noted that the 31-year-old runner’s time showed he had completed the second half of the race faster than the first half, the only runner to have ever done this in the history of the marathon, which raised a few suspicions.

Keen to hold onto his third place medal, and personal best race time of 2 hours 51 minutes, 21 minutes faster than his previous record, Mr Sloan laughed off suggestions that he’d cheated during the marathon after several spectators, and the runner who came in behind the 31-year-old, questioned his position in the race.

After the marathon officials launched an official investigation into the matter, Mr Sloan came clean and admitted he’d caught a bus for the last few miles of the race. He has since been disqualified and stripped of his medal, and the rightful winner of the third place has been awarded the prize.

London bus checker app launched

Bus users in London can now keep up to date on the very latest developments to their favoured routes and receive live updates at the click of a button thanks to a brand new app.

In August, Transport for London introduced its live data feed as part of its open data policy, the information from which has been used to develop the new bus checker application. TFL’s countdown site allows passengers to log on and check the progress of their chosen bus in real time, enabling them to make better use of their time in between services.

The application, which has been developed by FatAttitude, combines real time data relating to over 19,000 bus stops throughout the capital. Users can programme the app to alert them to any changes to their favoured bus route so they’ll receive information to update them on any cancelled buses or diverted routes, which could prove a godsend for busy city commuters. The app also displays the complete bus route, ideal if you’re travelling in an unfamiliar part of the city.

The bus checker application also boasts a GPS enabled map service which can direct users to their nearest bus stop, or find alternative routes in the event of a problem with their favoured bus route.

The iPhone application costs £1.49 to purchase, and can be downloaded from iTunes onto a range of devices such as iPhones and also iPads and iPod touch devices.

Fine for dodging fares on London buses could be about to rise

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson and Transport for London are considering increasing the fine for being caught fare dodging on public transport in the capital after the amount of money lost from fare evasion rose last year.

Figures revealed that the amount of money lost as a result of passengers on both the bus and tube network avoiding paying their fare rose to £63 million during 2010, the highest figure recorded in the last three years. The economic downturn and also an increase in the number of people using London’s transport system has been cited as possible reasons for the spate of fare dodging cases recorded last year.

The statistics showed that the case of fare evasion was worse on London’s buses than its tube system in 2010. The estimated cost to TFL for non payment of fares on buses was found to have risen by £7 million to £39.5 million, while this figure dropped for tube passengers from £22.3 million in 2009 to £19.6 million in 2010.

In an attempt to deter passengers from avoiding paying their fare, the mayor is looking at increases the penalty for being caught fare dodging from £50 to £80. The fine increase will come into force from January 2nd if plans to introduce the heavier penalty are approved.
