New London Routemaster bus showcased in the city

A prototype of the new Routemaster style double-decker bus received a preview in Golders Green last week ahead of the bus’s official debut scheduled for next month.

Around 500 people took to the streets in Golders Green in North London to see the “Boris bus” as it’s been nicknamed, up close for the very first time. An eclectic mix of people including students, tourists and local councillors turned out to give the new double-decker the once over and deliver their opinion on the re-mastered Routemaster last Friday.

The American tourists who’d arrived to view the new addition to London’s transport network were given a talk on the history of the original Routemaster before boarding the new version for a guided tour.

A technical consultant from Transport for London was also on hand to offer information on the new eco-friendly bus and to answer any questions from the people who’d arrived to look over the double-decker.

The new Routemaster features two staircases to allow easy access up and down from the top deck, as well as the original open back platform which was one of the distinguishing features of the original Routemaster.

The first new double-decker London bus is due to appear on London streets on February 20th and will operate on the number 38 bus route between Victoria and Hackney.

Charity minibus targeted by vandals in Ilford

A charity minibus has been completely vandalised with every single window being destroyed in what the charity workers have branded a mindless act.

The minibus is estimated to have been worth £40,000 as it was specially adapted in order to transport children and adults with learning difficulties. Now the vehicle is a ruin, with every window shattered to pieces, and damage sustained to the bonnet, window frames, and front headlights. The minibus had to be towed away on a recovery vehicle to undergo extensive repairs.

A shopkeeper reported the incident which occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning when he witnessed people running away from the scene. It is the second time the charity minibus has come under attack this year as in June, the minibus’s catalytic converter was stolen while it was parked outside of a day centre.

The incident occurred two days after the minibus had been moved from its usual parking spot outside a residential home to a position behind the charity’s head quarters. The charity say they will be looking for a new and safer spot in which to keep the minibus after its repaired as they fear it would be targeted again, or worse, set alight, should they return it to the same position.

The police are urging anyone with information regarding the vandalism attack on the charity minibus in Ilford to get in touch.

Minibus shopper service plans for Wrexham town centre

In recent proposals put forward by Wrexham Town Council, shoppers may soon be able to benefit from a new shuttle bus service which will operate on a circular route around the busiest shopping areas in the town.

The plans are still in the development stage, however if the new proposal gets the green light, Wrexham will be welcoming a new minibus service which officials hope will bring a much needed boost to traders in the town who have been struggling with the effects of the economic downturn.

The council is currently in the process of contacting potential minibus hire providers with a view to getting this project off the ground. It’s been reported that passengers will have to pay a nominal fare to travel on the circular town centre route, although the cost of travel will not be “significant” say officials.

The minibus service would operate on a circular route, dropping passengers off at convenient stops along the route.

The minibus scheme is part of a number of initiatives being put forward by the town council to help encourage locals into the town’s shops to keep the centre alive. A pilot scheme offering free parking at selected town centre car parks between 12 noon and 2pm, is another strategy being set up to tempt more shoppers into Wrexham town centre.

Lottery fund donates £10k for Exeter charity’s new minibus

The Lottery has donated £10,000 to the Crediton and District Community Transport Company to provide the charity with the funds to purchase a new minibus complete with wheelchair access facilities.

The money will mean the charity will be able to provide a reliable transport service for those with mobility issues living in the Exeter area. The charity feared their service would be hit hard as a result of the Government spending cut and that this would have a negative impact on the service they provide in the community, however with the news that the Lottery grant will donate £10,000 to the fund, the charity believes their work will now be safeguarded for the time being.

The new minibus will be fully equipped with extra wide doors and electronic ramp to allow wheelchair users to access the vehicle easily. The charity provides a very important service for those with mobility problems as it means these individuals have the freedom to get out and about and be independent thanks to the service provided by the Crediton and District Community Transport Company.

The money was donated as part of the The Big Lottery fund’s Awards for All programme which offers grants for between £300 – £10,000 to projects which will benefit the local community.

Charity minibus returned following break-in

A Bolton charity was delighted to have their minibus returned to them in perfect condition after it was stolen from the charity’s base back in October.

Bolton Community Transport and Furniture Services provides door-to-door transport for vulnerable people who are unable to get out and about on their own such as disabled and elderly individuals. The service which the charity provides has been described as a “lifeline” to those who depend on it.

Following the break in at the Bolton based charity’s head quarters, the minibus was stolen along with a Ford Transit van, and also a three sofas, cash, tool and several mobile phones all amounting to approximately £2,000.

It’s been reported that the thieves gained entry after breaking the lock on the compound gate. The police are still investigating the circumstances of the burglary and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

The minibus, which is vital to the charity’s work, was found abandoned but still in good working condition in a residential area in Salford. The minibus was only recovered after a Salford resident called to complain that the vehicle had been parked outside his home for some time.

Despite the burglary and the theft of their vehicles, the Bolton based charity was determined to keep up their service, and so arranged to hire an alternative minibus from the local authority.

Although the Transit van is yet to be recovered, Bolton Community Transport and Furniture Services charity as delighted to be reunited with their minibus.

Minibus speed limit increase discussed on Isle of Man

Isle of Man discusses the possibilty of increasing the speed limit for minibuses by 10mph

Transport officials have opened up a public consultation to discuss the possibility of increasing the speed limit of minibuses and similar vehicles on unrestricted roads in the Isle of Man.

The transport authority is proposing an increase of 10mph for minibuses carrying up to 16 passengers, motor homes, and towing vehicles on unrestricted roads on the island in a bid to improve traffic flow. The public are being asked for their views on the potential change to speed limits, the deadline which comments must be received by is July 30th.

The possibility of removing the speed limit restriction sign displayed on the dashboard and rear of good vehicles, which is currently a mandatory requirement, is also being discussed.

The move to increase the speed limit has come as a reaction to the advancement in technology now in use of vehicles such as minibuses and motor homes which means they are able to travel safely at higher speeds.

The transport officials also believe an increase in the limit would help reduce the number of traffic accidents on unrestricted roads as vehicles won’t be forced to overtake these slower moving vehicles, meaning there is less of a chance of an accident occurring.

At present there are no plans to increase the speed limit for coaches or vehicles carrying over 16 passengers.
