Bus driving Santa raises money for charity in Scotland

Until last Christmas, bus driver James Wallace was a regular face on the First bus services in Musselburgh, Scotland, and regularly dressed up as Santa over the festive period, much to the delight of his passengers. However after suffering a health scare, the 44-year-old had to call an end to his driving days.

However he wasn’t about to let this Christmas go by without donning the red and white suit and beard and getting back on the bus to bring some Christmas cheer to passengers, and also raise some money for charity.

This year James has had some help from a fellow Santa and an elf who have also been riding on the number 13 First bus route to help raise fund for the Down’s Syndrome charity, CHAS, as the 44-year-old bus driver’s daughter is affected by the condition as so it is a cause which is very close to his heart.

The Christmas crew alternate between the number 13 service and the Megabus route between Edinburgh and Dundee and Edinburgh and Perth. James has been driving his bus dressed as Santa for four years now, and since making a full recovery from his health scare, he saw no point in not carrying out his annual fundraiser.

The group are hoping to beat last year’s total when they raised £700 for the charity, and with several days still to go until Christmas and £500 already in the pot, the bus driving Santa’s look likely to exceed their target.

National Express £9 summer coach fares help boost profits

National Express have reported a rise in revenue in the last three months to September of 6% boosted by the transport operator’s successful summer promotional campaign of £9 coach fares.

The summer is the busiest period for all coach hire companies and so the success of the £9 coach tickets, which allowed customers to travel anywhere in the UK on the standard rate fare, helped National Express attract new customers during this time. According to the coach operator’s figures, 300,000 passengers took up the £9 bus fare offer which was available to anyone booking a one way ticket, a minimum of 14 days in advance.

The coach and rail operator also credited their Eurolines brand with helping to boost revenue by 6% in this period.

National Express weren’t the only coach travel provider to report an increase in passenger numbers and profits this year with Stagecoach, which operates both rail and bus routes, reporting that they’re on target to meet full year expectations as a result of growth in both train and coach travel.

The figures from these two leading public transport operators seems to suggest that more and more people and opting to leave their cars at home and jump on the bus and train instead. With fuel prices and the cost of motoring continuing to rise, coach offers such as the one from National Express this year are proving very tempting for those who would normally choose to travel by car.

Calls for Oyster Card in Scotland to encourage bus and rail travel

Transport groups in Scotland are calling for government intervention to set plans in motion to introduce smart card technology for use on public transport systems.

This smart card technology, known as the Oyster Card in London, was introduced in capital back in 2003. Since its launch, 43 million users have registered for an Oyster Card, with 8 million travellers using their card on the London bus, rail and tube network daily. Research has shown that Oyster Cards are used on 80% of all public transport journeys in London.

Transport campaigners in Scotland believe that the introduction of a similar ticketing scheme to public transport systems in cities in Scotland will help encourage commuters and travellers to get out of their cars, and onto buses and trains. By enticing people off the roads and onto public transport, campaigners believe there would be less congestion on the roads, and also reduced levels of pollution.

The flexibility of being able to get on and off different modes of public transport will be a good incentive for commuters to give bus and rail travel a go. The smart ticketing system allows registered users to top up their credit on their smart card either online with their credit or debit card, or at paying machines at stations.

Campaigners believe the Scottish government needs to get involved in order to gather all of the related organisations together to discuss the issue, and help push forward with plans for smartcard technology on Scotland’s public transport system.

Bus passenger injured after yobs drop paving stone on bus roof

A female bus passenger was injured after yobs dropped a paving stone onto the roof of a passing Lothian bus in Scotland this week.

The heavy concrete block was dropped onto the roof of the number 33 bus which was travelling to Wester Hailes at the time. The paving stone bounced off the roof, however the impact of the rock made the CCTV camera and lighting inside the bus crash down from the ceiling, striking the female passenger on the head.

The bus company took action to divert all other bus service away from the area immediately following the attack. The passenger was hurt, however she did not attend hospital for treatment.

Two male suspects, believed to be in their last teens and dressed in dark clothing, were spotted around the footbridge at the time of the incident.

The police have warned of a spate of similar incidents in the Wester Hailes area. In an attempt to combat this type of hooliganism, the police have been attending schools to talk to pupils about the dangers and penalties of carrying out such crimes.

Late last year a number of plain clothes officers posing as bus passengers travelled on decoy buses around Edinburgh areas affected by stone throwers in an attempt to apprehend the culprits.

Anyone with any information regarding the most recent bus attack is urged to get in touch with police.

Greyhound coach travel to expand into Scotland

It’s been announced that Greyhound will launch coach travel to Glasgow, Scotland, from the start of next year.

Since the iconic American transport provider was launched over in the UK back in 2009 by the First Group, it’s been hailed as a great success. The coach travel operator offered services initially in London and the South Cost before expanding to Wales with routes between Swansea and Cardiff.

Now the ambitious transport operator has its sights set on Scotland, with a route launching between London Victoria and Glasgow on January 10th 2011 with fares starting from just £1. Should the Scottish arm of the Greyhound coach service prove a success, the company is already planning other routes within Scotland with services running to Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

Despite the ultra low rate fare prices which start from just £1, with no fare costing more than £20 and also extra incentives for online bookings, Greyhound will have to compete with another budget coach hire provider, Megabus, who also run services to Scotland with fares starting from £1.

The Greyhound coaches will offer complementary newspapers, and also free WI-FI facilities if there is demand for the service. Initially there will be one daily service running from London to Glasgow and vice versa.

In keeping with the Greyhound tradition of naming coaches after women from famous American songs, the three coaches which will be launched in the New Year on the Scotland routes will be Hello Dolly, Long Tall Sally, and Suzy Baby.

Double-decker party bus loses it roof during promotional tour

A brand new state of the art double-decker party bus ran into serious trouble during its first official engagement last week after the driver failed to notice a sign warning of a low bridge, and sliced the roof clean off the luxury vehicle.

We reported last week that the Club Class bus was about to be re-launched after undergoing a £60,000 makeover.  A nightclub sound system complete with giant plasma screen were installed on the top deck of the double-decker, and were the first things to be obliterated following the collision with the bridge.

Four promotional staff as well as the female driver were onboard the Go Bananas Club Class bus at the time of the crash. One person was sitting upstairs and was thrown to the lower deck after the bus hit the bridge. It is understood that this staff member only suffered minor injuries.

The bus had been on a promotional tour of Edinburgh as part of the official re-launch of the party bus following its £60,000 makeover. It’s estimated it will cost between £10,000 and £20,000 to fix the damage caused by the collision with the low bridge which occurred near Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh.

Another two Go Bananas luxury party buses, which cater for corporate events and also hen and stag dos, are currently being built and will be ready by January.

Lothian buses launch a new fleet of luxury vehicles

After investing £3million in new vehicles, Lothian buses revealed this week the latest fleet of high spec buses are due to hit the road as part of the Airlink service at the end of the month.

The bus firm decided to push ahead with the hefty investment in new vehicles back in 2008 when it put an order in to coach builder, Wrightbus, for 75 vehicles. The 14 Airlink buses which are due to come into operation in the coming weeks are the most luxurious vehicles from that order.

The introduction of the new fleet comes just after the new was released by Edinburgh airport that they have beaten their target of getting 26% of its passengers to use public transport. Figures revealed recently showed that in fact, 28.7% of its passengers had travelled to the airport by public transport.
