Coach passenger’s lost £70k found at airport

A 81-year-old man who reported losing a holdall stuffed full with £70,000 in foreign currency on a Heathrow to Hampshire National Express coach service is due to be reunited with his cash after it was found at the airport.

The elderly gentleman believed he’d lost the money at some point during the coach trip after leaving the bag containing the cash in the luggage compartment of the bus. However after the loss was reported to police, they checked the CCTV images taken from when the man boarded the coach and found that the black holdall was never placed on the vehicle.

With this evidence, the police were able to isolate the search to Heathrow Airport where the passengers had landed on a flight from Thailand on the day of the incident. The gentleman had brought the money, in Thai baht and Australian Dollar currency, to the UK with a view to purchasing a property here.

The police issued a warning to all shop keepers and banks between Heathrow and Hampshire to be wary of anyone looking to exchange or pay for goods with large amounts of foreign currency after there were initial suspicions that the money had been stolen from the coach service.

The black holdall was later tracked down by police at the airport, and they have confirmed it matches the description of the one reported missing on the National Express service. The authorities say they are making plans to reunite the 81-year-old with his lost cash.

Man loses £70k of cash on National Express coach journey

A man in his 80’s has reported £70,000 of cash missing after he left a black holdall stuffed full of foreign in the luggage area of a National Express coach travelling from Heathrow to Portsmouth on Tuesday.

The elderly man had just flown into Heathrow Airport after travelling from his home in Thailand with his life savings of £70,000 packed into a black holdall. After touching down in the UK, the gentleman boarded a National Express coach bound for Portsmouth, depositing his bag packed full with £70,000 made up in Australian dollars and Thai baht, in the luggage compartment of the coach.

It’s been reported that the elderly man had transported his life savings over to the UK as he intended to purchase a property in this country, however his plans have been severely scuppered after the huge amount of cash went missing during the coach trip.

The coach departed Heathrow at 4:45pm on Tuesday afternoon, although the bag containing the £70,000 wasn’t reported missing until just before 8pm that evening when the service arrived in Portsmouth following a number of scheduled stop-offs along the route.

It’s possible the bag may have been taken by mistake, although no other bag was left in its place. In the event that the bag stuffed with foreign currency was stolen, the police are warning banks and shopkeepers to be wary of anyone attempting to exchange or pay with large quantities of cash in Australian dollars or Thai baht.

The police are urging anyone who travelled on the coach service to get in touch so that they can be eliminated from their enquiries.

Electric shuttle bus introduced by BA at Heathrow Airport

British Airways has become the first airline at Heathrow Airport to introduce an electric shuttle bus service which will be used to transport staff between the terminal and the airline’s head quarters.

The electric shuttle bus service for BA staff will swing into action this week. The airline estimates that over a year, the electric bus will cover 17,710 miles and thanks to the bus’s low emissions, the vehicle will save 20 tonnes in reduced emissions every year compared to a fuel powered bus.

The 8.1 metre long green bus has the capacity to carry 24 seated passengers and additional standing passengers. To highlight the battery powered bus’s green credentials, the vehicle has been painted bright green. The bus will undertake shuttle runs transporting staff between Terminal 5 of Heathrow Airport, and British Airways head quarters at Waterside.

British Airways say the new green initiative is just one way in which the airline is looking to reduce its carbon footprint. The battery powered bus service is supplied by Flights Hallmark who say it’s vital for companies to explore different ways for powering vehicles and subsequently reducing their carbon emissions.

BA is also looking at ways in which to reduce their carbon emissions in the air by developing sustainable jet fuel plants. However Lufthansa is the only airline which is currently trialling biofuel on regular commercial routes.

M4 bus lane to come to an end

The M4 bus lane will be axed on December 24th

The government have revealed plans earlier this month to scrap the M4 bus lane by the end of 2010.

The bus lane which runs 3.5 miles between London and Heathrow will be suspended for 18 months from December 24th 2010 but will be re-introduced during the London Olympics in 2012. Following the Olympics, the M4 bus lane will be scrapped for good.

The controversial M4 bus lane was launched 10 years ago and allows 7% of London bound traffic to travel on the restricted lane including buses, licensed taxis and motorcycles. However from December 24th, the lane will be open to all vehicles which will help ease congestion on the notoriously busy stretch of road.

The bus lane which runs through West London and onto Heathrow was introduced in 1999 under the Labour government and was intended to help speed up journeys between the capital and the busy airport.

The M4 bus lane was rarely enforced by the traffic police, as statistics revealed that only 14 fixed penalty notices of £60 were issued during the whole of 2008.

Many motorists have welcomed the move to axe the M4 bus lane as many believe it will help ease congestion on the busy road.

Fast track bus service to Heathrow set to cut out Harefield

Recent proposals show the new express bus service to Heathrow won't stop in Harefield

Residents in the village of Harefield in the London Borough of Hillingdon are up in arms after it was revealed recently that a new fast track bus service to Heathrow won’t be stopping in the village.

Some locals have expressed concerned that they are being “cut out” of the plans and feel as though they’ve been “left out in the cold.” Others have reacted angrily saying, “Do they not think people in Harefield go on holiday and want to get to Heathrow?”

Under the new plans proposed by Hillingdon Council and Transport for London, two express bus routes to Heathrow are being prepared, neither of which will run through Harefield.

The proposal is currently undergoing a consultation period through a local publication, the Hillingdon People Magazine. However at a recent resident’s meeting, many locals complained that they hadn’t received their copy of the magazine.

Although there are a number of bus services running east to west across the village of Harefield, there are scare amount running from north to south.

Local campaigners are urging the residents to join together to fight for improved public transport links through the village. It’s hoped that if these grievances are made known to the council, they can influence Transport for London to make vital changes to the bus travel in the area.

Hillingdon Council are seeking feedback from locals in regard to the proposed bus service. Those who wish to respond need to do so before February 15th either in writing to the council, or through their website.
