Go North East bus provider launches bus tickets on your mobile

Go North East bus service provider which operates 660 buses and coaches providing local transport services have introduced as brand new mobile ticketing system which will enable smartphone users to pay for their travel online and display their e-ticket on their phones.

The North East bus and coach transport operator, which transport 72 million passengers every year, has teamed up with the Corethree platform to provide the electronic ticketing facility for bus and coach passengers. The e-tickets will be compatible for use on a wide range of smartphones including iPhone, Blackberry, and Android.

The tickets must be displayed to the driver on the passenger’s phone when boarding each bus or coach service. A number of anti-fraud checks have been put in place to prevent fraudsters taking advantage of the new electronic ticketing service. The multi-layer solution uses colour, words and moving digital water marks to distinguish the genuine e-tickets. A number of elements will also change on the tickets on a daily, hourly or even weekly basis to combat any attempts to replicate the bus fares.

The transport operator already offers a mobile app to allow passengers to access bus and coach timetabling, locate nearest bus stops and live service updates via mobile devices.

The mobile ticketing system is due to come into play on February 8th on Go North East bus and coach services.

Troubled coach holiday company finds new owners

Troubled coach holiday company from Norfolk, Harrison Holidays, has been bought out by the Australian owned OzBus based in Cambridgeshire. The Kings Lynn based company, which had been operating for 50 years, called in the administrators in November after the company had experienced a challenging period of trading, running up debts in the region of half a million pounds.

OzBus, the new owners of Harrison Holidays, say they were attracted to taking over the failing company for a number reasons, including the firm’s long standing history in the area, and also because OzBus believe Harrison Holidays is a strong brand with a loyal customer base.

The new owners plan to run as many of the scheduled coach hire trips as possible, and also revealed plans to reopen Harrison Holiday’s shop on Kings Lynn high street. OzBus say they are confident they can breathe new life into the company, and take the coach hire company forward. All customers who’d booked coach holidays with Harrisons will be contacted by OzBus with regard to updates on their booking.

OzBus specialises in epic 3-month long coach hire trips running from the UK to Australia. The company’s main head quarters is based in Brisbane, however the UK base for the Aussie firm is in Cambridgeshire.

Going forward, OzBus plan to continue to offer the UK and European coach holiday tours as Harrison Holidays did, although there are plans to run adventurous OzBus holidays alongside the more traditional coach tours.

Coach hire company launches sightseeing tour of the M25

A coach hire company has launched a brand new sightseeing tour as part of its new schedule for 2012 which includes a coach trip around the London Orbital. Surprisingly, there’s been so much interest in the planned tour, that the coach operator has added a second date due to popular demand.

Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company came up with the idea of introducing this unusual sightseeing tour and are currently selling tickets for the experience at £15 per person. One complete lap of the London orbital is 117 miles long taking 1 hour and 40 minutes to complete at an average speed of 70mph.

In the coach tour description, the sightseeing experience will guide the passengers through a potted history of the London orbital and reveal some interesting facts about the motorway which circles the UK’s capital.

The first tour had been scheduled for October 11th, however a second date has been added due to a spike in interest bringing the first date forward by seven months to March 22nd. The services will depart from Worthing on the days of the tour, stopping off in Hove and Brighton to collect more passengers before heading northwards to join the M25 at the Merstham interchange. Which direction the bus travels around the circular route will be decided on the day with the toss of a coin.

Another London based coach hire company is also planning to run a similar M25 sightseeing tour around the time of the London Olympics.

Bus driving Santa raises money for charity in Scotland

Until last Christmas, bus driver James Wallace was a regular face on the First bus services in Musselburgh, Scotland, and regularly dressed up as Santa over the festive period, much to the delight of his passengers. However after suffering a health scare, the 44-year-old had to call an end to his driving days.

However he wasn’t about to let this Christmas go by without donning the red and white suit and beard and getting back on the bus to bring some Christmas cheer to passengers, and also raise some money for charity.

This year James has had some help from a fellow Santa and an elf who have also been riding on the number 13 First bus route to help raise fund for the Down’s Syndrome charity, CHAS, as the 44-year-old bus driver’s daughter is affected by the condition as so it is a cause which is very close to his heart.

The Christmas crew alternate between the number 13 service and the Megabus route between Edinburgh and Dundee and Edinburgh and Perth. James has been driving his bus dressed as Santa for four years now, and since making a full recovery from his health scare, he saw no point in not carrying out his annual fundraiser.

The group are hoping to beat last year’s total when they raised £700 for the charity, and with several days still to go until Christmas and £500 already in the pot, the bus driving Santa’s look likely to exceed their target.

Coach holiday operator gets taken over by new owner

Troubled coach holiday operator, Crusader Holidays, has succeeded in securing a new owner after the company went into administration at the start of the month. Motts Leisure Ltd, based in Buckinghamshire, has been named as the new owners of the coach travel provider, and are already pulling out all of the stops to ensure all planned coach tours go ahead.

Essex based Crusaders Holidays who operated out of their Clacton-on-Sea office, announced the winding up of the business earlier in December after coming into financial difficulty. Luckily, Crusaders Holidays were affiliated with Bonded Coach Holidays which meant that all monies paid by customers who had booked with the company prior to it going into administration would be safe.

This message has been reiterated by the new owners who say that no customer will lose out financially, and that they are working extremely hard to ensure all scheduled tours can go ahead as planned, or customers will be issued with a refund.

The new owners said they’ve faced issues getting some of the planned tours up and running as a handful of the hotels involved in the holidays had cancelled the Crusaders reservation after news reached them of the company’s problems, however Motts Leisure say they are working hard to overcome difficulties such as this.

Bosses at Motts Leisure who took over have just taken over Crusaders Holidays say they hope to retain all of the staff left at the company after the firm went into administration and that they also plan to continue to operate part of the business from the operator’s original offices in Clacton, Essex.

Prior to going into administration, Crusaders Holidays had been providing coach tours throughout the UK and parts of Europe since 1974.

Sleeping coach driver woken by school pupil who saves bus ride from disaster

A 17-year-old school pupil saved a recent bus trip from disaster after he woken the driver after he noticed the 65-year-old had fallen asleep while behind the wheel.

The incident occurred in Tacoma, Washington, during a routine school bus trip on which 17-year-old Emmanuel Williams regularly travelled. The pupil said he had noticed the driver was periodically closing and opening his eyes for short spaces of time while driving the school bus full of children, but when the student noticed the bus started to veer across the road, he quickly jumped to his feet and ran to the front of the bus to rouse the driver who had dozed off.

The moment the watchful teen leaps to his feet, grabbing the steering wheel and simultaneously waking the driver from his sleep, was captured on the CCTV camera installed on the bus.

Luckily the driver snapped awake and quickly regained control of the school bus, averting disaster. The bus travel company say they are investigating following the report of the near miss on the school route, however they added that the 65-year-old bus driver in question has an impeccable driving record without a single incident or accident reported in the 8 years he’s been with the company.

The travel firm say the bus driver in questioned has been put on leave while the matter is investigated. The bosses say they are looking into whether the driver’s drowsiness was caused by medication or a health condition.

Coach driver sacked after being snapped doing Sudoku puzzle while driving

A coach driver who was snapped tackling a Sudoku puzzle while driving a school bus has lost his job. A 12-year-old pupil travelling on the bus service to school in Dorset captured the driver doing the puzzle using the camera on his mobile, later showing the picture to his mother who alerted the authorities.

The driver of the coach was transporting a group of school children and was stuck in moving traffic when he decided to take his puzzle book out. The driver was seen with this head down, pen in hand, with his concentration focused on the Sudoku puzzle rather than his driving. Once the school bus driver realised he’d been photographed, he put the book aside.

The school alerted the transport company to the complaint as soon as it was received from the mother of the youngster who caught the driver playing Sudoku rather than paying attention to the road. The coach transport hire company were said to be “horrified” when they received the complaint and have launched a full investigation, the driver in question was also sacked from his job with immediate effect.

Both the mother and the school say were satisfied with the swift manner in which the matter was dealt with, although the parent added she hadn’t intended to have the driver lose his job, but felt it was her duty to alert the authorities as the driver was putting the lives of the children he was transporting at risk.

Coach holiday company from Essex goes into administration

A coach holiday provider based in Clacton-on-Sea in Essex has called in the administrators this week. Crusaders Holidays had been operating for almost 40 years after the business was first launched in 1974. The administrators will be contacting customers within the next few days to advise them on the next steps to take.

The Essex based coach holiday company coordinated short trips throughout the UK and also parts of Europe. While many customers who’d booked coach trips for the upcoming festive period will be left disappointed at missing out on their holiday, there is some light at the end of the tunnel as passengers who’d paid in full for a trip won’t lose out financially.

Crusaders Holidays were a member of the Bonded Coach Holidays Scheme which means that any customers who had paid in full for an upcoming holiday, which included coach travel and at least one night’s accommodation, will be protected by the policy and will therefore receive a refund for the monies paid to the now defunct coach company.

The administrators called in to oversee the winding down of Crusaders Holidays will be contacting all customers who’d made bookings with the coach holiday provider over the coming days to inform them of the recent developments and how this affects them and their reservation. These customers will also be given information on how to obtain claim forms to request their money back.
