Diwali Festival to light up London this month

Diwali_in_LondonCoach-loads of spectators are set to descend on Trafalgar Square in London for this year’s celebration of Diwali, the Hindu, Sikh and Jains Festival of Light.

Organisers will no doubt be keen to emulate the success of last year’s event, which attracted more than 30,000 people.

Diwali 2008 will take place on October 19th and celebrates the victory of good over evil with an action-packed programme of music and dance performances and awe-inspiring light displays.

It traditionally coincides with the new moon during the darkest night of the month, which usually falls in October or November.

Proceedings kick off at 15:00 BST for this year’s celebrations, opening with a traditional circular dance, the Garba.

Those arranging car hire transport that miss this opening act are advised to ensure they get to Trafalgar Square in time for the lamp lighting ceremony, which is accompanied by a chorus of traditional Diwali songs.
