New safety feature for school buses could help save lives

New highly visible sign invented to improve the safety on school coaches

A road safety campaigner from the North East of England is pushing for a new safety device to be fitted on all school vehicles. The grandfather from Gardenstown has been campaigning for greater safety on school vehicles after his granddaughter Erin was left paralysed after been struck by a car in 2004.

One local authority in England is already carrying out trails on the new device which is designed to make school buses more visible and to alert other motorists and pedestrians to the presence of the vehicle and children leaving the bus.

Currently all school buses display a yellow sign which marks it out as a school vehicle. However it has been criticised for is ineffectiveness with many complaining that it has little impact, which is why the new re-vamped sign was called for.

The new school bus sign which will be displayed on the front and back of the vehicles, lights up and flashes every time the bus door is opened to signal to passing motorists that the passengers are disembarking. It has been taken up by East Riding of Yorkshire Council have been experimenting with the device on their school coaches. Council officials have praised the simple yet effective gadget and say it could potentially be drafted out throughout the whole of the UK in the future.

Safety for school buses was stepped up last year in this area of the North East after the death of two school children who were hit by cars shortly after leaving their school bus. It is hoped that these new measures will go some way to safeguarding children who travel on school transport.

New government seat belt campaign

The government has stepped up its efforts to ensure that all British motorists and their passengers wear a seat belt, with the launch of a shocking new TV advertising campaign. Seat belt

According to new figures published by the Transport Research Laboratory, one life a day could be saved across the UK if everybody adhered to the law and belted up before driving off.

Furthermore, it was also found that a significant number of people still fail to wear a seat belt, including passengers enjoying the benefits of limousine hire, leading the government to release its new images depicting the damage caused to internal organs by crashes occurring at everyday speeds.

Commenting on the importance of the new campaign, road safety minister Jim Fitzpatrick concluded: “Every day someone dies simply because they are not wearing a seat belt.

“That’s a tragic waste that could be avoided if everyone took the simple step of belting up whenever they got in a car.”

This comes as the government’s new THINK! campaign has revealed that young men, whether they are drivers of their own vehicles or passengers in a car hire vehicle, are the least likely to always wear a seatbelt.

Yorkshire drink driving ‘text message’ campaign launched

Drivers in North Yorkshire could receive a text message from the police this Christmas, in the hope of encouraging them to arrange car hire home. untitled

Road safety campaigners are intent on following up the success of their 2007 drink driving campaign, utilising the latest mobile technology this year.

Police will send the text messages via Bluetooth to motorists in target areas, which may encourage those driving under the influence to pull over and book a taxi home.

John Everson, 95 Alive Road Safety Partnership coordinator, told the York Press: “We hope it will act as another deterrent and prove to drivers that police are looking to catch drink-drivers.

“Last year’s campaign was a great success, but there is still a hardcore who don’t get the message.”

The Road Safety Partnership aims to save one in three lives each year through its campaigning.

It has targeted safer roads throughout York and North Yorkshire by the end of 2010.

The agency was formed in November 2004 and has targeted reducing the number of incidence of killed or seriously injured children by 60 per cent in line with government targets.

Lorries to get safety mirrors

lorriesAuthorities in London have today called for all lorries to be fitted with safety mirrors to reduce the risk of collisions with cyclists.

The London Assembly made the announcement following reports that nine cyclists have died in the capital so far this year as a direct result of lorry collisions.

Unlike coaches and private car hire motorists, heavy goods vehicles are thought to be less able to see cyclists on the road due to a combination of factors including the drivers position in the cab.

Joanne McCartney, assembly member, said: “This Assembly supports the use of ‘safety mirrors’ by HGVs which increases the ability of lorry drivers to be aware of cyclists.

“The Department for Transport estimates that a year’s delay in putting these measures in place could cost 18 lives in the UK.”

This follows an announcement from the Mayor of London Boris Johnson, who has also called for a rephrasing of traffic lights across the capital to ease traffic congestion.
